Is the European translation sector ready for the post-corona era? Your perception counts!

European Language Industry Survey ELIS 2021How resilient is the European translation sector in the current crisis? What is the financial health of the sector? No one knows, because no one wants to pay to collect the hard numbers and make the useful calculations with them.

That is why the European translation sector gauges the self-perception of its resilience and Post-Covid readiness. This does not require statistics with hard-hitting figures, but an annual survey that gauges trends, expectations and concerns. That's all extremely valuable of course, as long as you realize that you're not measuring the pulse or the heart rate, but just the patient's mood... or the athlete.

The survey is divided into subsets with questions adapted to different types of respondents: translation companies, freelance translation professionals, translation departments in enterprises and other organisations, translation training, purchasers of translation services. Once in the survey, navigate to the right subset.

Translation for subtitling - Analysis of the subtitling into Italian of the Netflix television series "La casa de papel"

Translation for subtitling

Bologna, Martina Bandini - For a translator, the complexity of audiovisual translation (AVT) lies in the fact of dealing with dynamic texts, which are constructed both through written and oral language, as well as verbal and non-verbal codes.

Therefore, images impose on translation not purely linguistic limitations - those of time and space - which must be complied with in order to guarantee a reliable product, well made and that transmits the message effectively in the target language. .

In fact, when subtitling a film or television series, each translator is obliged to make decisions that directly affect his text, but that have nothing to do with the criteria of the language.

For this reason, when the object of the translation is audiovisual in nature, it is always necessary to take into account not only linguistic, but also technical standards, which to a certain extent depend on the company that distributes the content. This was the objective of the research, written to present my Final Master's work at the University of Bologna (Faculty of Language, Society and Communication), that is, to analyze the translation for the subtitling of the first chapters of the television series Spanish of Netflix "La casa de papel", both from a linguistic and technical point of view, to evaluate the translation in a certain way and then see how the application of one or the other rules influence the perception of the program by the public.

In this article, written specifically for the purpose of publication on The Language Sector website, the work will be presented in a summarized and more general way, but it is available (including its bibliography) in full version for those who request it.

The judge and the quality of the translation. Serial - episode 5: the judge and the quality of interpreting performance

The judge and the quality of the translation. An exciting serial in eight episodes written by Isabelle Bambust.

In the previous episodes we were given access to court records that questioned the quality of the translation of procedural documents. We have seen many cases in which judges judge the upstream quality of translation. We were also given access to files in which judges address the control of downstream quality of translation.

In this fifth episode we look over the shoulder of the judge again. This time, it is the interpreting services that are not always of the same quality. How does the judge deal with it when the quality of the interpreting is under discussion?

Ghent, Isabelle Bambust - The judge has to deal with the quality of translations in his files in various ways. A translation may be the subject of a dispute, or there may be discussion about the translation of procedural documents or oral communications.

In this episode, we will focus on interpreting of varying quality, starting with the performance of a French gendarme, which, according to the French Court of Cassation, is "someone who speaks the language".

The judge and the quality of the translation. Serial - episode 4: downstream translation quality

CamelThe judge and the quality of the translation. An exciting serial in eight episodes written by Isabelle Bambust.

In the previous episode, we talked about the upstream translation quality. We saw how judges in France, the Netherlands and Belgium judge translated quality upstream.

In this fourth episode we go see the downstream one. How does the judge handle downstream translation quality control? Are you still keeping up with me?

Ghent, Isabelle Bambust - Upstream quality control ('en amont') actually leads to a natural feeling of guarantee with regard to the translation. "Investing in a high-quality selection and recruitment of translators alone is a guarantee of quality."(26) From the transcendent quality approach, this upstream control should lead to high quality translations.

However, we all know that this is not always the case in reality. In certain cases, there is also a downstream check on the concrete quality of a translation. This check is then done from a product-based approach. But...

The previous episode took place in court, where it emerged that translation quality within court is not the same as outside court.

In this third episode, you'll discover that there is upstream translation quality ("en amont"), in the fourth downstream ("en aval"). Are you keeping up with me?

Ghent, Isabelle Bambust - Upstream translation quality is quality at an abstract formal level: a translation is of high quality if it meets the prescribed quality requirements for translators and interpreters, if it meets the mandatory entries in registers and if it has diplomas to be submitted.

A vade-mecum on the public procurement of translation services

Public procurement of translation services: a vade mecum for authors of tender specifications"It still happens too often that the service that makes the specifications, perhaps by a lack of understanding of the characteristics of the professional translation business, calculates the allocation solely based on the price, with all its consequences." That's what Rudy Taki said, President of the Belgian Quality Translation Association (BQTA).

"For the authority, that's a missed opportunity. Our sector contains numerous professionals, both freelancers and translation agencies, but they must be given the opportunity to put forward their value in the procurement process, "says Guillaume Deneufbourg, President of the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters (BKVT).

On Friday 29 september, in Brussels, the BQTA and BKVT suggested a vade-mecum for 2017 with recommendations for administrations that outsource translation work.
