Cluj-Napoca is the Centre for the Industry of Languages

On 16 October 2015, the city of Cluj-Napoca, located in the heart of Transylvania and the European Youth Capital of 2015, will host the fifteenth edition of the international conference titled "Tinerii traducători și interpreți într-o Europă a post-comunicării" ("Young Translators and Interpreters in a Europe of Post-Communication). This year there will be six workshops: General and Specialised Translation, Conference Interpreting, Language and Multimedia Engineering, Terminology, Translation, Interpreting and Interculturalism, and Young specialists in Communication and the European Labor Market.

The conference will be organized by the Department of Applied Modern Languages in the Faculty of Letters of "Babes-Bolyai University" (UBB) and by the Centre for the Industries of Language (CIL), and it will take place in the conference hall at Hotel Universitas (str. Pandurilor nr. 7 Cluj-Napoca), between 09:00 and 19:00. The speeches and debates will be in the following languages: English, French, Spanish and Romanian, all of which will have simultaneous interpretation.

The Centre for the Industries of Language and the Department of Applied Modern Languages

The Centre for the Industries of Language (CIL) of the Department of Applied Modern Languages (AML) from "Babes-Bolyai" University of Cluj-Napoca was established through the UBB Senate Decision of 17 July 2008 and is the first school of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, with a research programme that follows the model of the French School LEA (Langues Etrangères Appliquées).

By promoting interdisciplinarity in communication and linguistic mediation, the CIL aims to continue introducing new ideas and products to the market, thus maintaining its prestigious reputation. One of the greatest advantages for the students is the opportunity to learn a third language. The proposed courses are intensive: six hours a week, with a high level of specialisation. The students will acquire the necessary skills to communicate professionally in their chosen language, as well as learn about the culture of that language.

In addition to the above courses, the CIL has the following objectives:

  • maintaining a relationship with the industry
  • providing translation services
  • training communicators, translators, terminologists and interpreters
  • emphasising the importance of information in the translation process
  • collaborating with prestigious companies such as Octopus Translations, Emerson, SDL
  • conducting excellent research programmes
  • life-long learning

As the CIL serves the Department of Applied Modern Languages, the direct beneficiaries of the services offered are the 600 students, and the CIL team consists of about 30 teachers and employees of the AML department. The team of specialists was headed by Rodica Baconsky for 13 years, founder of the first Romanian school of Modern Applied Languages.

After a discussion with Mihaela Toader, who has been the director of the CIL since 2003, we arrived at a precise understanding of the centre's concept of the language industries. It comprises translation studies, general and specialised translation, terminology, terminography, localization, subtitling and conference interpreting.

One project that was conducted with the participation of the CIL and is highly rated internationally was the development of the PRO-MULTILINGUA learning platform in partnership with the universities of Hasselt and Vienna. This project has succeeded in adding four additional language combinations with Romanian in the Plurilingua modules.

In the field of machine translation, where much research is being carried out, it should be noted that with the support of the CIL, AML students can now benefit from professional internships. One particular project in collaboration with SDL aims at furthering research in this field of translation.

Together, the CIL and the AML always seek to achieve excellence. The experts who form the nucleus ensure that all areas of interest are covered. Some of the prestigious developments that highlight the value of the CIL / AML are:

  • The affiliation of the AML with AILE (Association Internationale Langues et Economics)
  • The affiliation of the Master of Translation Studies and Terminology with DGT's Visiting Translator Scheme
  • The affiliation of the Master of Conference Interpreting with the European Masters in Conference Interpreting
  • The affiliation of the Master of Translation Studies and Terminology with the EMT Network (European Masters' in Translation)
  • The creation of the first international network of Applied Modern Languages
